I received my fiber glass rod from Jon earlier in the week, and finally went fishing today. I typically fish bamboo and have had MANY graphite rods in the past but never any "glass". I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The rod handled perfectly on the small creek I fished. I would highly recommend this rod for small creek fishing and would definitely try it on larger rivers in the future. Bamboo, like graphite, comes in many actions/tapers.....comparing it to bamboo(if you are familiar) I would say this particular rod was closer to a Dickerson 7012 although this glass rod is 6" longer. For a glass rod it was a little stiffer(faster action) which was perfect for my cast. I have lawn tested a Butter Stick and this rod was stiffer....which to me is great because I'm not a fan of the overally slow action rods. Working with Jon was a pleasure. He is always smiling, very accommodating, and communicates throughout the process of the rod being made - which only took a couple weeks. I would highly recommend this glass rod, and if you are looking at trying a glass rod, or even a different graphite rod, Yellowfin Custom Rods is an excellent choice. They appear to be well made, cosmetically perfect throughout, and a bonus that it is made by someone local!

What can I say? My second rod from Jon was this amazing nymph stick. I've fished, and own, nymph rods from the $200-$900 price range and my PA trout rod from Jon is still my go to 3wt nymph stick. From the custom logo to the super clean wraps and glass job, this rod will stay in the lineup and be both a rock steady dependable tool and a treasured piece of art for years to come!

I’ve been prospecting the Colorado high country for trout (and Brookies) for nearly 40 years. I’ve always enjoyed using light-weight equipment on these high-alpine adventures. When I was invited to Canada to fish for Walleye and Northern Pike, I knew my current rod quiver was outmatched. I needed a new rod. I asked Jon to build me an 8 wt custom rod to fight these toothy beasts of the North and did he ever come through. The rod performed flawlessly throwing heavy streamers and held up to being tossed around in a boat on the lakes for a week. Living near the Reservoir, I knew I would need a big rod to hunt Wipers and Grass Carp, so I contacted Jon about building me an 8 wt. He did an amazing job and worked with me very closely on cork and guide selection and blank and wrap color combinations. I’ve had no problems making the 50’-60’ casts towards spooky Grassies. I recently decided to bring it along on a float trip and I’m glad I did. While hucking some heavy streamers and nymph rigs, I was able to land a 30” hawg rainbow on it! The butt section was plenty stiff enough to land that beast with little difficulty. Thanks for the trout of a lifetime and my new favorite rod!

Fly fishing has evolved to multiple levels and many facets and complexities that make it such a lifelong endeavor. It take pioneers of the sport to advance the sport’s efforts. Jon and his rod art is a prime example of doing just that. I asked Jon to build something completely unique, to my history and current proclivities of the sport, and he did exactly that.
